Driving Around Thailand with Peace of Mind
Most people holidaying in Phuket or Bangkok prefer to rent a car rather than try to manoeuvre one on their own. This is probably because the streets in this country are known to be congested and busy all the time what with tourists coming in all year round. However, if you prefer to be the man behind the wheel instead of hiring a chauffeur, then what you need is a great sense of direction and auto insurance. The last requisite is compulsory in Thailand regardless of the type of transport you wish to operate.
This provision comes in two major types which are the compulsory government scheme and voluntary or private. Regarding the first option the cost is fixed and you can only obtain the insurance from the local Department of Land Transport (DLT). Its coverage is very basic with a maximum payout of around fifty thousand Baht for third party death or injuries. Once you get the indemnity, you are required to display the appropriate sticker on your automobile. The second type, on the other hand, gives you four options for additional protection.
- Class 1 or Comprehensive covers fire, vandalism, theft, natural disasters, and other unexpected casualties such as a tree falling on your vehicle.
- Class 2 is also known as Third Party Fire and Theft. This is often a preferred choice among new and young drivers due to a reduced cost of premiums.
- Class 3 or Third Party only car insurance provides only a minimum level of coverage. Specifically, it will only protect you from any liabilities you incur to others.
- Class 3+ follows a similar policy to the category previously mentioned with the inclusion of medical expenses and automobile protection. It also comes with a bail bond which you may need in case you get arrested or detained.
It is up to you whether you stick to the obligatory indemnity or apply for additional provisions. You can, however, make a better decision if you spend time in Thailand and familiarise yourself with road rules and common situations you are likely to encounter before you try to drive your own vehicle.
